Michael is the author of three books, including 2022’s Hearts on Fire: Six Years That Changed Canadian Music 2000–05 and the 2018 national bestseller The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip. He lives in Toronto and writes the Substack newsletter That Night in Toronto. Michael thinks the most world-changing event of the last 25 years has been the legalization of gay marriage: “a rare triumph for empathy,” he says.
